Darkness Falls on a Saturated Course

Into the night, the Tug Hill Extreme Adventure race became a true test for teams. The navigation was tough. The terrain was subtle and racers sank up to their thighs in the thick marshy ground. Many beaver dams lie undisturbed in this area, changing the landscape with each new season. The dams also provided more stable ground for racers to traverse this spongy area. To add to the challenge, much of this orienteering would need to be done in the darkness of a moonless night. Teams had a brief respite from the cold and wind though as they rode into transition area 3. “We heard this was the party TA.,” said one racer. At the end of an extremely sketchy, remote gravel road, organizers had set up a generous aid station with hot food and a fire for warming frigid racers.
